The Lost Cyclist - David Herlihy
The Lost Cyclist: The Epic
Tale of an American Adventurer and His Mysterious Disappearance is the previously untold story of Frank Lenz, a
young man who left his home in Pittsburgh in the spring of 1892 to cycle
around
the world on a new-fangled "pneumatic safety" (the prototype of the
modern bicycle) only to disappear mysteriously in Turkey two years into
his
epic journey. David Herlihy's gripping narrative
captures the soaring joys and constant dangers accompanying the bicycle
adventurer in the days before paved roads and automobiles.
And there is a local connection: Frank Lenz visited New Orleans in August 1891, having cycled here from Pittsburgh on his high-wheeler, a warm-up trip he took with his buddy Charles Petticord, some months before embarking on the world tour.
DAVID V. HERLIHY is the author of Bicycle: The History and his
work has been featured on National Public Radio and Voice of America and
in the New York Times, the Boston Globe, Boston,
and Historic Preservation. In 1999 Herlihy received the McNair
History Award from the Wheelmen, the preeminent American association of
antique bicycle collectors.
