Please join us for story-time/drawing-time and a booksigning with celebrated children's picture book illustrator Peter Brown featuring his just released CREEPY CARROTS! Highly recommended for ages 4-8.

The Twilight Zone comes to the carrot patch in this clever picture book parable about a rabbit who fears his favorite treats are out to get him.

Jasper Rabbit loves carrots—especially Crackenhopper Field carrots.
He eats them on the way to school.
He eats them going to Little League.
He eats them walking home.
Until the day the carrots start following him...or are they?

Peter Brown’s stylish illustrations pair perfectly with Aaron Reynold’s text in this hilarious picture book that shows it’s all fun and games…until you get too greedy.

"This age-appropriate horror story takes children’s fears seriously and then offers them an escape through genuine comic relief." -- School Library Journal

Join us for a book release party with children's book author Dianne de Las Casas and illustrator Marita Gentry featuring BEWARE, BEWARE OF THE BIG BAD BEAR. No one knows how to throw a more fun kids' book launch event then these two - there promises to be loads of hands-on activities, interactive storytelling, costumes, live art, biscuits (with homemade jams!) and more, followed by a booksigning.

Their tasty tale is of a family on a bright, sunny morning. Maw Maw wants nothing more than to make her beautiful, delicious, buttery biscuits. But, she is out of the most essential ingredient—sody sallyraytus. Without it, no one can enjoy breakfast!

Maw Maw sends her family off on a mission that proves to be more dangerous than she thought. She warned them about the big bad bear that lives under the bridge. No one listened. Even Maw Maw falls victim to the giant animal! It appears as if there will not be any fluffy biscuits ever again, but when a smart, brave, and hungry squirrel comes to their rescue, everyone finds their taste buds satisfied. Readers will not feel left out, however—a biscuit recipe in the back of the book is sure to please!

Waldo's turning twenty-five! So,  we're throwing a party for the famous fellow in the striped-shirt and black-rimmed specs.  If you spotted him at the the sixteen participating local businesses and collected "I Found Waldo" cards, you can win prizes -- including buttons, books, and more.

On Saturday, August 4 at 2:00 p.m., bring your cards  to the Waldo's birthday party at Octavia Books. If you found Waldo everywhere, you will be eligible for a chance at the grand-prize, a complete six-volume deluxe set of Waldo books. And everyone bringing in cards from at least 11 of Waldo's local hangouts will be eligible to win fine prizes contributed by the participating businesses.

While the dress code is optional, we strongly encourage you to come as a Waldo look-a-like

Here are the participating businesses:

Waldo is the creation of Martin Handford, whose entertaining drawings of crowd scenes swept the world in 1987. Since then, the Where’s Waldo books have held a cherished spot on bookstore shelves the world over. There are now over 55 million Waldo books in print worldwide, and they’ve been translated into eighteen languages. An entire generation has grown up searching for Waldo and his cast of wandering companions.

In celebration of Waldo’s longevity and popularity, his American publisher, Candlewick Press, is teaming up with the American Booksellers Association and 250 independent bookstores all across the country -- including Octavia Books in New Orleans -- to generate fun and encourage people to visit local independent businesses. There is no charge to participate. The game lasts the entire month of July. Sumi Hara loves fashion. She always looks beautiful, and always wears “the” perfect outfit. When she arrives in Aventurine, Sumi is thrilled to learn that she’s a shapeshifter.

Unfortunately, she’s not very good at shape-shifting yet, so she’s given a guide named Kano — who’s distractingly gorgeous in his human form. But right away they get off on the wrong foot; Sumi can’t understand why this boy doesn’t seem to like her. When they find out that an evil fairy queen holds the final mirror shard needed to complete their mission, Sumi will have to discover what true beauty and perfection are, or she could lose Kano and her chance to become a fairy godmother.

Dress in your best fairy costume and celebrate this wonderful book from Jan Bozarth!

Jan BozarthJan Bozarth always dreamed as a child that she could weave her interest in dance, music, art, and poetry together. Her dream came true when she grew up and had a music and writing career. Now she is a grandmother who writes stories and songs for young people and often works with her own adult children who are musicians and artists in Austin. Sometimes Jan is the fairy godmother who encourages them to believe in their dreams. Jan credits her own mother, Dora, for handing down her wisdom—dream big and never give up.
