Revolution by Jennifer DonnellyContemporary Brooklyn and the brutality of Revolutionary Paris converge seamlessly in Jennifer Donnelly’s REVOLUTION — a breathtaking novel that weaves two girls’ stories into one remarkable account of life, loss and enduring love.

In 2002, a New York Times article about the DNA identification of the heart of Louis Charles—the young son of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette—caught the eye, and emotions, of Jennifer Donnelly. The back story of his death touched her so deeply she was inspired to write REVOLUTION, her first young adult novel since her Printz honor-winning A Northern Light (2004). In the story, Donnelly turns the reigns over to two very distinct voices—Andi Alpers who lives in modern day Brooklyn, and Alexandrine Paradis who lived over two centuries ago in Paris. Andi is on the edge, destroyed by rage and grief and about to be expelled from Brooklyn Height’s most prestigious private school. She’s angry at her parents, and heartbroken by the loss of her younger brother, Truman. Alexandrine always dreamed of making her mark on the Paris stage, but a fateful encounter with a doomed prince of France cast her in a tragic role she didn’t want—and couldn’t escape. Their stories come together when Andi travels to Paris and discovers Alexandrine’s diary in an old guitar case. She is moved by her words to the point of obsession, and what unfolds is an exhilarating journey where the past becomes suddenly — and terrifyingly present.

Donnelly’s passion for history and hands on research shines brightly on the pages of REVOLUTION. Through Andi and Alexandrine, Donnelly explores the importance and power of art and music, takes on families in crisis, mental illness, and racial and class inequality. Readers young and old will relate to these issues, and find themselves immersed—grappling with the same questions that inspired Donnelly to write.

FORGE by Laurie Halse AndersonOne of our favorite children's/YA book authors, Laurie Halse Anderson, a National Book Award Finalist and winner of the Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction, is returning to Octavia Books to sign her new book, Forge

In this compelling sequel to Chains, Laurie Halse Anderson shifts perspective from Isabel to Curzon and brings to the page the tale of what it takes for runaway slaves to forge their own paths in a world of obstacles—and in the midst of the American Revolution.

The Patriot Army was shaped and strengthened by the desperate circumstances of the Valley Forge winter. This is where Curzon the boy becomes Curzon the young man. In addition to the hardships of soldiering, he lives with the fear of discovery, for he is an escaped slave passing for free. And then there is Isabel, who is also at Valley Forge—against her will. She and Curzon have to sort out the tangled threads of their friendship while figuring out what stands between the two of them and true freedom.

SHIVERby Maggie StiefvaterStiefvater leaves the faeries of Lament and Ballad for a lyrical tale of alienated werewolves and first love . . . her take on werewolves is interesting and original while her characters are refreshingly willing to use their brains to deal with the challenges they face.

Join us for a reading and booksigning with YA book author Maggie Stiefvater featuring her novel SHIVER (recommend for ages 13-17)

For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf—her wolf—is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human... until the cold makes him shift back again.

Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human—or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever.

Maggie Stiefvater

In latebreaking news, Maggie will also bring along two other important YA authors: Carrie Ryan who will sign FOREST OF HANDS AND TEETH and DEAD-TOSSED WAVES, and Jackson Pearce, who will sign AS YOU WISH.
