Dalt Wonk - THE RIDDLES OF EXISTENCE

Please join us for a presentation and signing with New Orleans writer and artist Dalt Wonk featuring his just released THE RIDDLES OF EXISTENCE.

The Riddles of Existence is an oversized deck of fifty cards, each with a full-colored figure wearing a costume. Beneath the illustration, there is a riddle in verse. The costume is the answer, or hint, to the riddle. This is the game. The illustrations and the verse provide great pleasure, above and beyond, the game. There is also a card with the answers to The Riddles of Existence for those who are stumped.

As author/illustrator Dalt Wonk writes:

Mention New Orleans and people think of Mardi Gras. Mention Mardi Gras and people think of costumes (as well as other unmentionable things which can be lumped under the heading of "revelry").

Mardi Gras (let's call it "Carnival") has been celebrated in New Orleans since the mid-t9th century with parades. At its apogee, until the Great Depression, artists designed the costumes as well as the floats — often working with the same annual parade for decades. A friend took me to see the original water-color costume designs and I was knocked out. The seed for this project was planted.

If you think about it, a costume is a sort of visual riddle. Especially in New Orleans, where the imagination runs wild. "What are you supposed to be?" you often ask a masquer in the street. Once I found myself confronted by a Dueria, the Pope and the Whore of Babylon (all three of the male sex)!

Like the artists of ages past, I started designing costumes — also in water-color. Then I prompted the disguised characters to introduce themselves with a quatrain that was a riddle. The costume gave the riddle's solution or at least a clue to it.

Here, you find a deck of cards, each one of which is a costume design and a riddle. Another card lists all the answers, but not in any particular order. Some of the answers are obvious; some are more obscure.

A process of elimination should result in The Riddles of Existence being solved.

Inspired by the costume designs of New Orleans' century-old Mardi Gras traditions, The Riddles of Existence is a kind of modern reinvention of Tarot Cards. But these cards are not for predicting the future. They are for having fun now.

The Riddles of Existence are an oversized deck of fifty cards, each with a full-colored figure wearing a costume. Beneath the illustration, there is a riddle in verse. The costume is the answer, or hint, to the riddle. This is the game. The illustrations and the verse provide great pleasure, above and beyond, the game.
