Lawrence Wells - GHOSTWRITER and FAIR YOUTH

Come join us when author Lawrence Wells presents and signs his two new books, GHOSTWRITER: Shakespeare, Literary Landmines and an Eccentric Patron's Royal Obsession and FAIR YOUTH: A Novel.

GHOSTWRITER, creative nonfiction, is the story of Wells being hired by the University of Mississippi to ghostwrite "Fair Youth," a novel, for a potential donor (the late Gertrude C. Ford) for a planned $10m performing arts center. “Mrs. F” was convinced that Edward de Vere, 17th or Oxford, was William Shakespeare, and that she was the reincarnation of de Vere's alleged mistress, Queen Elizabeth I. ("A rich and amusing literary memoir with a conspiratorial twist.“ Kirkus Reviews)

FAIR YOUTH, fiction:  “Lawrence Wells‘s historical novel Fair Youth enlivens the theory that Edward de Vere, England ‘s Earl 17th of Oxford, was the true author of William Shakespeare‘s plays… Spirited and speculative, Fair Youth is a captivating historical novel that explores the true origins of Shakespeare’s works.” -- Meg Nola, Foreword

Fair Youth was named a finalist in the 2024 Hawthorne Prize competition. Ghostwriter was a finalist in the International Book Awards competition.

Lawrence WellsGhostwriter manuscript was awarded the 2014 Faulkner-Wisdom prize for narrative non-fiction at the Words and Music Festival in New Orleans. His memoir In Faulkner’s Shadow, about his 38 year marriage to Dean Faulkner Wells, was published by University Press of Mississippi in 2020. Wells is also the author of three historical novels, Fair Youth, Rommel and the Rebel and Let the Band Play Dixie.
