New Orleans Independent Bookstore Day

Independent bookstores are not just stores—they are community centers and local anchors run by passionate readers. They are entire universes of ideas that contain the possibility of real serendipity. They are lively performance spaces and quiet places where aimless perusal is a day well spent.

Please come by to celebrate Independent Bookstore Day with us and show your support for this amazing movement. We’ll have fun together along with stimulating activities all day long. And, we are also featuring some exclusive literary-themed art and gift items you will want to have to remember this special day.

Independent bookstores are my first stops in any new city, a quick check of the pulse in any literary community. They are ports in the storm, passageways to magical lands, escape hatches out of bad moods. Even when I don't think I need a book, because the stack beside my bed is teetering toward the ceiling, I always need a bookstore. And then I usually need a book, too.” -Emma Straub, 2017 Independent Bookstore Day "Author Ambassador"

Octavia Books, Garden District Book Shop, and Tubby & Coo’s Mid-City Book Shop and Maple Street Book Shop are celebrating Independent Bookstore Day in New Orleans. Each store is planning special activities; and together we are offering the chance to win $100 in gift certificates for book lovers who visit all four participating New Orleans bookstores as part of a fun, city-wide scavenger hunt. The four stores have also joined together to give away a limited number of Blackbird Letter Press New Orleans City Notebooks (printed in Louisiana) to customers who purchase who spend $25 or more on Saturday, May 13th.

Over 400 independent bookstores are celebrating Independent Bookstore Day. In New Orleans, we have our own special day to celebrate, 2 week later in deference to Jazz Fest (where you will find us operating the book tent).

At Octavia Books, special author events (with an Independent Bookstore Day twist) include:

2:00pm to 4:00pm
Don't miss this audience-interactive author signing celebrating David Cappello newly published epic biography of Crescent City retail legend - and share your Schwegmann Stories on Hilarie Schackai's magnificent zoom recorder.
4:00pm to 6:00pm
For the spectacular closing act, the one-and-only Roy Blount Jr. presents the new trade paper edition of SAVE ROOM FOR PIE: Food Songs and Chewy Ruminations. Not only will he entertain you as he signs your book(s), he'll serve some scrumptious pie (do save room!) provided and baked by Chaya Conrad from her Bywater Bakery especially for this occasion.

Limited Edition Exclusive items include:

$6 Story: The Sandmeyer Reaction

The second edition in our on-going $6 Stories series is a short story that was cut from Michael Chabon’s newest novel, Moonglow. It’s a hilarious side-story of the half-baked plan to catch a German spy via the well-connected Jews of Philadelphia’s underbelly in the 1940s. In typical Chabon style, it’s fast and funny, and bursting with a cast of perfectly rendered outcasts and oddballs.

About the author: Michael Chabon is the bestselling and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, Wonder Boys, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, Summerland, The Yiddish Policemen’s Union, Telegraph Avenue, Moonglow, and many others. He lives in Berkeley, California with his wife, the novelist Ayelet Waldman, and their children.
